6. When Harry Maguire signed a new Manchester United contract this month, the experienced England defender removed himself from the list of this summer's potential free agents. Some big Premier League names have already announced their intention to leave when their deals expire - including Manchester City captain Bernardo Silva, Liverpool's Andy Robertson, Newcastle United's Kieran Trippier and Maguire's team-mate Casemiro. But the future of many senior players remains uncertain, with fewer than five weeks of the league season remaining. From returning loanees to stand-out performers who are likely to be in demand elsewhere, BBC Sport takes stock of more than 60 players who could be on the move come June. 7. Players at the World Cup could face a red card if they cover their mouths when speaking to opponents during confrontations. The decision was taken during a special meeting of the International Football Association Board (Ifab) in Vancouver, Canada, on Tuesday, where two Fifa-proposed law amendments were approved. Players who leave the pitch in protest at a referee's decisions could also now face a red card, following ugly scenes at the Africa Cup of Nations final between Morocco and Senegal. Both law changes have been approved as competition opt-ins by the Ifab. Fifa has confirmed they will be adopted at this summer's World Cup. The issue of players covering their mouths became high profile in February when Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni raised his shirt while speaking to Real Madrid's Vinicius Jr during a Champions League game. The Argentina international was accused of racist abuse and provisionally banned for one match. Following a Uefa investigation, Prestianni was found guilty of homophobic conduct and banned for six matches - three of which were suspended. The issue was discussed at the Ifab annual general meeting in Wales later that month where it was agreed members would reconvene ahead of this week's Fifa Council in Vancouver. The decision remains at the absolute discretion of the referee, who will consider all circumstances before issuing a red card. Link: https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/c202rgdlqxqo
  8. Afghanistan women will become a "symbol of resilience" after Fifa approved their return to international competition, says former captain Khalida Popal. Afghanistan have not played a competitive international since December 2018. The Taliban's return to power in 2021 triggered restrictions on women's rights, including a ban on women's sports which forced many players to seek asylum overseas. Fifa's governance regulations previously prevented it from officially recognising a team unless they were recognised by their member association, in this case the Afghanistan Football Federation. However, the amendment - approved at a Fifa council meeting in Vancouver on Tuesday - means Fifa can approve the registration of a national or representative team "under exceptional circumstances" to ensure players are not prevented from playing international football due to "situations beyond their control". It means Afghan players will be able to represent their country in official matches with full recognition. "Our team has always been known as an activist team," Popal told Reuters. "But this opportunity, with the right support from Fifa, will be the time for us to also show some skills and develop the youth talent in the diaspora. "I know it's going to be tough because Afghan women inside Afghanistan will struggle to be part of that. "But if we can still be the voice for them to send out hope messages and show them our support that you are not forgotten, then we will continue to use our platform." Fifa's decision builds on the formation of Afghan Women United, a refugee team sanctioned and supported by Fifa for a one-year pilot in May 2025 after several years of lobbying by the country's displaced players. Afghanistan will not be eligible to qualify for the 2027 Women's World Cup, but they could compete in qualifying for the 2028 Olympics and are expected to return to action in June. Fifa president Gianni Infantino said: "We are proud of the beautiful journey initiated by Afghan Women United and, with this initiative, we aim to enable them, as well as other Fifa member associations that may not be able to register a national or representative team for a Fifa competition, to make the next step." There are more than 80 Afghan female footballers in Australia, Europe, USA and the Middle East, including many of the 25 players under contract before the Taliban's takeover. Regional selection camps, hosted by Fifa, are taking place in England and Australia before a training camp in New Zealand in June. Afghan United Women played three matches in 2025 as part of the Fifa United Women's Series, with their first win coming against Libya in November. 9. Paris St‑Germain full-back Achraf Hakimi has been ruled out for the "next few weeks" after suffering an injury during his team's dramatic win against Bayern Munich in the Champions League. Hakimi played the full 90 minutes and provided an assist for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia as the reigning champions posted a 5-4 win against the Bundesliga side in the first leg of their semi-final tie in Paris on Tuesday. "Having suffered a right thigh injury during the match against Bayern, Hakimi will remain in treatment for the next few weeks," PSG said in a statement. The Morocco international will now miss the semi‑final second‑leg against the German side in Munich on 6 May. Hakimi was replaced at half-time in PSG's 3-0 win at Angers in Ligue 1 last weekend but returned to the starting line-up against Bayern. The right-back pulled up clutching his hamstring in the closing stages of the first leg but stayed on after receiving treatment as PSG had exhausted all their substitutions. The injury also raises questions over Hakimi's availability for the upcoming World Cup, which is set to begin in the United States, Canada and Mexico in six weeks. Hakimi has been ever‑present for Luis Enrique's PSG and scored the opener as the Parisians defeated Inter Milan 5-0 in last season's final to become European champions for the first time. He also started every game for Morocco during their historic run to the semi‑finals at the 2022 World Cup. Link: https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/czd21418352o
  10. Liverpool expect Mohamed Salah to return from injury before the end of the season after he was forced off against Crystal Palace on Saturday. There were concerns that the 33-year-old forward may have played his last game for the club when he went off in the second half with a suspected hamstring issue. It would have been a sad end for Salah, who announced last month that he would leave after a glittering nine-year spell at Anfield, in which he has scored 257 goals in 435 appearances. However, the club said on Wednesday that the problem is a "minor muscle injury" and that it is "anticipated" the Egypt international will recover in time to feature again before leaving the club. Liverpool's final game of the campaign is at Anfield against Brentford on 24 May. The timeline for his return also ensures Salah remains on track to captain Egypt at this summer's World Cup. 11. Road to Vostok, the hardcore survival shooter developed by Finnish former army officer Antti Leinonen, has built up a lot of hype since Leinonen released its first demo in 2022, thanks in no small part to how terrifying it is to be shot at by its bandits while you're scavenging for soup cans. That hype, it seems, has delivered for the solo dev: After launching in early access on Steam earlier this week, Leinonen says Road to Vostok's "absolutely insane" day one sales success has brought in enough funds to support its development for the foreseeable future. Link: https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/survival-shooter-road-to-vostok-secured-the-entire-production-budget-for-this-game-for-years-and-years-to-come-within-24-hours-of-its-steam-early-access-launch/
  12. Jeff Kaplan is tackling the real, gritty questions while showing off his new multiplayer action-survival FPS game The Legend of California. And what is the realest, grittest question an ex-Blizzard dev could answer? No, not that one. It's actually about Tracer's butt. To the few of you who are fortunate enough to not have a clue what I'm talking about right now, look away now and spare what remaining braincells you have left. The size of Tracer's butt was actually a huge deal 10 years ago, around the release of OG Overwatch. Overwatch creator Jeff Kaplan confirms Blizzard never nerfed Tracer's butt, it stayed the sameAnswering the real questions pic.twitter.com/lsifFQUkRpApril 9, 2026 Link: https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/it-stayed-exactly-the-same-jeff-kaplan-takes-us-back-to-2016-by-confirming-that-blizzard-did-not-change-the-size-of-tracers-butt/
  13. Pour one out for all the people who can't stand playing Overwatch's most popular maps, because the next season is going to make it even harder to play on anything else. Whenever a classic Overwatch map shows up as an option on the map voting screen, you know you're probably stuck with it. Most players prefer the likes of King's Row—a hugely popular map that's been in the game since launch—over the newer options, and, currently, it takes a lot of luck for the system to pick one with only a couple of votes. Starting next week with season 2, the already low odds of playing on an unpopular map will plummet: Blizzard is changing the rules so the map with the majority of the votes will automatically win. "We don't want to entirely remove the joy of variety, but when most of the lobby wants something, we want to honor that," associate game director Alec Dawson wrote in a blog post today. 14. Fragmentary Order is an upcoming "hardcore sci-fi FPS" project helmed by Rant Gaming and publisher Cor3 with some involvement from Escape From Tarkov boss Nikita Buyanov. Buyanov has, however, confirmed that Fragmentary Order "is not related to BSG or Tarkov", being more of a separate project. Regardless, it seems to share much of the same DNA when it comes to its music, animation, assets, and even its website. Set to be a "next-generation multiplayer combat tactical simulator in hazardous environments." It essentially just sounds like an extraction shooter in space. Players will take control of "clone assets" to remotely enter a battlefield spread across the solar system, such as the hostile and partially terraformed planet of Mars, carrying out contracts and scavenging for resources, all while simply trying to make it out alive. 15. 16. Celtic and Hearts supporters will find themselves in an interesting predicament come the next round of Scottish Premiership fixtures - having to root for their rivals. Celtic are up first in the top three battle when they visit Hibernian on Sunday (12:00 BST) before Hearts host Rangers the following day (17:30). The defending champions are three points behind leaders Hearts so a win at Easter Road would take them level, but behind on goal difference, before the action at Tynecastle on Monday. Hibs are six points adrift of Motherwell in fourth, and five clear of Falkirk behind them in sixth, with four games still to play as the fight for European places continues. David Gray's side will need a lot of things to go their way to catch Motherwell but a fifth placed finish could still guarantee European football in the form of the Conference League's second qualifying round. That's if Celtic go on to beat Dunfermline Athletic and lift the Scottish Cup. Beating Celtic would do Hibs no harm in that regard and it would also do their Edinburgh neighbours a massive turn. Hibs have taken four points from Celtic Park this season, although it was 2007 when they last managed back-to-back wins over Celtic. Hearts fan Liam Corbett is not expecting any favours from their city rivals. "They're not going to throw the game because they're professional footballers," he told the BBC's Scottish Football Podcast. "But the edge to their game is not going to be there because they'll know, having sat and watched us gloat and celebrate from Sunday to Sunday, they have an opportunity to put real pressure on Hearts going into the game on the Monday." Link: https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/crkpmgjvk2zo
  17. Manchester United's youngsters are chasing silverware on a couple of fronts. At under-21 level, Adam Lawrence's side beat Sunderland on Sunday to secure a Premier League 2 play-off quarter-final trip to Crystal Palace. Darren Fletcher's under-18 side may miss out on the Premier League North title to Manchester City, but they have a chance to avenge that in the FA Youth Cup final against their neighbours - the date for which is still to be agreed as it is wrapped up in the fixture wrangle affecting Pep Guardiola's title-chasing senior squad. For United's players, these matches are huge and could have a significant impact on who gets an opportunity to play a meaningful role in the early part of pre-season and push their claims for more involvement at senior level. In 2018, United's first pre-season game came four days after France beat Croatia in the World Cup final. Jose Mourinho's squad included seven rookies, including Tahith Chong, James Garner and Mason Greenwood, who was only 16 at the time. This time around, United start their pre-season the day before the final, against Premier League promotion hopefuls Wrexham in Helsinki on 18 July. Given players are allowed a minimum three-week break between the end of one season and the start of the next, it effectively means any player involved in the World Cup will not be in Finland. Of the current squad, Patrick Dorgu, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko play for countries who have not qualified. Luke Shaw, Mason Mount, Leny Yoro, Ayden Heaven won't be picked, while centre-back Matthijs de Ligt seems unlikely to be called up by the Netherlands given his injury issues, and keeper Andre Onana is still under contract but currently on loan in Turkey with Trabzonspor. That is potentially a lot of youngsters playing against Wrexham, and potentially Norwegian side Rosenborg on 24 July. Lawrence said no decisions have been taken yet. "At the end of the season and the start of next we will sit down and look at the individual pathways and programmes for the players," he added. "There will be some that hopefully, if their performance levels - and where they're at - deserves, will be involved with the first team in pre-season. "Then you're looking to see if those players grasp the opportunities, just in terms of, for instance, it being a World Cup year, there might be even more players that go with the first team. Link: https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/cqjplgg7kywo
  18. Alfie Whiteman scans the self-portraits on display at a Grade II listed art gallery inside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the ones he took of himself hanging out of a tumble dryer, celebrating a birthday alone in the woods and sitting naked on a jetty staring out over Sweden's Lake Mockeln. "There was no intention of anyone ever seeing these pictures," he laughs. "But that also just reflects how I was living before - I kind of split my life in two." Whiteman was on the bench when Spurs won the Europa League in Bilbao. Less than a year since that success he is showing BBC Sport his new exhibition having retired at just 26 a few months later. An open-top bus parade through the north London streets where he grew up was the culmination of more than 15 years with the boyhood club he joined aged 10, having watched them lift the 2008 League Cup at Wembley with his dad. "I was waving at my friend and sister like 'I'll be home in a sec just doing a loop round the block!'," he says about the Europa League celebrations. "There was a youth centre I used to help out in and one of the kids was like 'Hey! What are you doing there!'" Whiteman had offers to stay in the game when his Tottenham contract expired last summer, trialling with Championship and League One clubs, but instead decided to focus on his work as a photographer and film director. Stepping away was a huge decision, though, for a goalkeeper who could have played on for more than a decade. One coach told him retiring would be a "crime". "I called my agent because I had to be like 'stop, I'm not going to go to this club…' and he was really understanding," says Whiteman. "But I didn't tell anyone, I didn't do an Instagram post like 'guys just so you know…' no-one cares about that. "It's such a commitment, essentially a life's work, sacrifice, all those other things that go with it, to end, in some people's eyes, prematurely. It's rejecting this kind of 'boyhood dream'. "But I have had the best time of my life in the last eight months, learned so much and been so fortunate to be working with such talented people on exciting things. So I don't think that's necessarily true. "It was scary, though, because at the time I didn't have anything set up. A few days after I was assisting this photographer and packing down C stands, and like 'this is great'. But I then had to scramble and do things, and still am." Link: https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/c4g519p53l9o
  19. Chelsea captain Millie Bright has retired from football with immediate effect. The 32-year-old made 294 appearances for the Blues after joining from Doncaster Belles in 2015 and also won 88 caps for England. The defender won eight Women's Super League titles with the Blues - including six in a row between 2020 and 2025 - as well as six FA Cups and four League Cups. But the former England defender has not featured for the Blues since February because of an ankle injury and has decided now is the time to end her career. "Representing Chelsea over the last 12 years has been everything to me, but I'm now ready to say goodbye to playing football," said Bright. "I've given all I can, and I never wanted to fight for any other badge. "It is now time, and I'm ready to go into a new era. I'm always going to be Chelsea, but just in a different way." Bright will be taking on a new role as a club ambassador, and will retain her position as a trustee of the Chelsea foundation. Link: https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/cvgzd945593o
  20. Every once in a while a match comes along that reminds us all why football is referred to as the beautiful game. Paris St-Germain's record-breaking 5-4 Champions League semi-final first-leg victory over Bayern Munich was one such occasion. It was the highest scoring semi-final since Eintracht Frankfurt beat Rangers 6-3 in the 1959-60 European Cup - and will live long in the memory. Not for its tactical genius or calculated gameplans, but for two sides with remarkable attacking quality throwing everything at it in the hope of securing a place in next month's final in Budapest. In a campaign where set-pieces have become king, defensive interventions are celebrated like goals and the long throw-in has made a comeback, this was a refreshing reminder that simply scoring more goals than your opponent can be the key to success. Bayern opened the scoring in a breathless first half, but defending European champions PSG came back in thrilling style to gain a three-goal advantage at 5-2 and surely put one foot in the showpiece. But the German champions showed their tenacity and talent to reduce the deficit to one and ensure they remain in the tie for next week's return leg in Munich. As pundits and fans celebrated an extraordinary advert for the game, PSG boss Luis Enrique enjoyed it too. "It was amazing. I think it was the best match I have ever managed as a coach," he said. "It had amazing rhythm, trying to play offensive football, trying to show their quality. I think everybody had fun watching the match. I'm happy because we won." 21. The major highlight for Warzone's midseason update is the addition of new limited-time modes. One mode is exclusive to Black Ops Royale and the other is limited to Rebirth Island. Hot Pursuit is a mode for Black Ops Royale on Avalon. This is inspired by the original Blackout battle royale mode of the same name. Hot Pursuit is basically a game of cops and robbers. Players compete in squads of four and choose to play as either cops or robbers. Designed around vehicular gameplay, players can choose to hop into a police vehicle to track down the robbers or jump in a getaway car to find valuables. Players will respawn so long as one squad member is alive. Prop Hunt Royale is played as 24v24 matches on Rebirth Island, and it's much like Call of Duty's classic Prop Hunt party mode. This is a round-based mode, and teams are either props or hunters in a game of hide-n-seek. Season 3 Reloaded arrives in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and Warzone next week, and Activision has revealed the full roadmap for this midseason update. Season 3 Reloaded is packed with more weapons, a RoboCop crossover event, a new Zombies map, Warzone limited-time modes, and more content for Endgame.
