  3. Cristiano Ronaldo and Darwin Nunez have led the tributes for Diogo Jota after the Portugal international died in a car crash aged just 28. Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, both tragically lost their lives in the accident on Thursday morning in the north of Spain. Jota recently married his long-term partner and had three children. Tributes have poured in for Diogo Jota after the Liverpool and Portugal forward tragically passed away in a car crash with his younger brother, Andre Silva, on Thursday morning, aged just 28. The accident took place in the Spanish province of Zamora and left the football world in shock. Jota enjoyed huge success during his career. Domestically, he won the Premier League, FA Cup and two Carabao Cups during his time at Liverpool, while he also played a part in Portugal’s two UEFA Nations League crowns. To more info: Click here
  4. Katariina Kosola's fine strike clinched a 1-0 win for Finland over 10-player Iceland to kick off Euro 2025 in Switzerland. Rather than the hosts opening proceedings, as has become expected at major tournaments, these nations started the Euros in Thun - but both struggled to break the deadlock in a scrappy first half at Stockhorn Arena. Iceland were reduced to 10 players when Hildur Antonsdottir was shown a second yellow card for stamping on Eveliina Summanen's ankle with 33 minutes remaining. Finland capitalised on their advantage and found the back of the net 12 minutes later when Kosola curled a terrific strike past goalkeeper Cecilia Runarsdottir into the top corner. Sveindis Jonsdottir had a chance to equalise moments later when through on goal but swept her effort wide, much to the disappointment of the raucous Iceland support. What was the main talking point? Despite it being the opening game of Euro 2025, there was little fanfare as the players took to the pitch. It was similar to every other competitive international, with fans belting out their national anthems and the countries' flags laid out on the pitch. While Euro 2022 kicked off in spectacular fashion when hosts England edged past Austria in front of 68,871 fans at Old Trafford, the first game in Switzerland was played in a 8,100-capacity stadium with some empty seats. It seemed a strange way to get the tournament under way, but the party atmosphere will begin in the later Group A fixture as hosts Switzerland and Norway start their campaigns after a three-part opening ceremony at St Jakob-Park in Basel. 5. Clouds are formed by the accumulation of ice crystals, microscopic water droplets suspended in the atmosphere, or a combination of both, resulting from the condensation of water vapor. For this reason, scientists have pondered over the years how much a cloud weighs. Years ago, scientist Margaret LeMone of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, USA, calculated the weight of a cloud. To do so, she first measured the size of the cloud's shadow and estimated its height, assuming the cloud was cubic in shape. Then, based on previous research, she estimated the density of water droplets at approximately 1/2 gram per cubic meter. Therefore, LeMone calculated that if a cloud had a density of one cubic kilometer and was multiplied by the weight of the water particles, there would be 500,000,000 grams of water droplets in such a cloud. This would be equivalent to approximately 550 tons, which is more than 227 elephants, each weighing approximately 2,200 kilograms. This study reveals a striking contrast between the visual perception of clouds and their actual weight. Despite their light appearance, these formations carry considerable weight due to the large number of water particles they contain. To more info: Click here
  6. The Eiffel Tower is a living example of physical principles in action. Every summer, its expansion reminds us of the importance of science in engineering and design. The Eiffel Tower, one of the world's most iconic monuments, is not only a symbol of Paris but also a fascinating example of engineering and science. Every summer, this iron structure experiences a curious phenomenon: its size increases. This change is not perceptible to the naked eye, but it is a fact that has intrigued scientists and tourists alike. The reason behind this phenomenon lies in thermal expansion, a physical principle that affects all materials, but which, in the case of the Eiffel Tower, manifests itself most notably due to its construction and the materials used. Below, we will explore in detail why and how this phenomenon occurs, and what implications it has for the structure and its maintenance. Thermal Expansion: A Natural Phenomenon Thermal expansion is a physical phenomenon that occurs when materials expand as temperature increases. In the case of the Eiffel Tower, built with puddled iron, this phenomenon is especially relevant. Iron, like many other metals, has a coefficient of linear expansion that determines how much it expands when the temperature rises. During the summer, temperatures in Paris can reach up to 40°C, and the tower's structure can heat up even more due to direct solar radiation. This increase in temperature causes the atoms in the iron to become more agitated, increasing the distance between them and thus expanding the structure. This growth can be between 12 and 15 centimeters, a figure that, although small compared to the tower's total height, is significant from an engineering point of view. To more info: Click here

  9. So, what is the oldest country in the world? The answer lies within Italy's boot: San Marino, the third smallest nation in the world—after the Vatican and Monaco—known as "the most serene republic" for its political stability for nearly 2,000 years. This is San Marino San Marino is an autonomous country in central Italy, located between the regions of Emilia-Romagna and Marche. Its western border is just a 20-minute drive from the Italian coastal city of Rimini, facing the Adriatic Sea. Another nearby location, about two hours away by road, is Bologna. The country is named, obviously, in honor of Saint Marino, a stonemason from present-day Croatia who escaped religious persecution by the Roman Empire and built a church on Mount Titano. There, the community that would become San Marino grew, a country founded in 301, already under the name of the Republic of San Marino, which it retains today. Since then, like Switzerland—another small, mountainous nation—it has witnessed a history in which it has mostly played no part. Thanks to this, it has maintained its independence all these years. 10. Borussia Dortmund will have to overcome "superstar" Sergio Ramos and his winning mentality to reach the Club World Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday, said the German team's coach Niko Kovac. Former Real Madrid captain and four-time Champions League winner Ramos, 39, is Monterrey's defensive leader and Kovac highlighted the Spaniard's will to win and Monterrey's aggression. "He's a superstar you know," Kovac told a news conference Monday ahead of the last 16 clash against the Mexican side. "All the players that are playing so long... it shows their mindset. They are winners, they want to win in every single training session, every single game, they want to be on the top level with every single pass in training," continued the Croatian. "He's a leader, as a leader you want to be as long as possible on a high stage. It's a little bit funny I'm now a coach and he's still a player -- but I think he will become a coach." Ramos will do battle with Dortmund striker Serhou Guirassy, who excelled this season and finished as the joint-top goalscorer in the Champions League with 13 strikes. To more info: Click here
