So, what is the oldest country in the world? The answer lies within Italy's boot: San Marino, the third smallest nation in the world—after the Vatican and Monaco—known as "the most serene republic" for its political stability for nearly 2,000 years. This is San Marino San Marino is an autonomous country in central Italy, located between the regions of Emilia-Romagna and Marche. Its western border is just a 20-minute drive from the Italian coastal city of Rimini, facing the Adriatic Sea. Another nearby location, about two hours away by road, is Bologna. The country is named, obviously, in honor of Saint Marino, a stonemason from present-day Croatia who escaped religious persecution by the Roman Empire and built a church on Mount Titano. There, the community that would become San Marino grew, a country founded in 301, already under the name of the Republic of San Marino, which it retains today.
