FOOTBALL & RICH PEOPLE: HOW WEALTH SHAPES THE MODERN GAME

Football today is deeply influenced by the world’s richest individuals and families, who see the sport not only as entertainment but also as a powerful mix of business, prestige, and global influence.
Wealthy owners have transformed clubs into international brands by investing billions in infrastructure, star players, academies, and marketing. A clear example is Paris Saint-Germain, owned by Qatar Sports Investments, which turned the club from a domestic contender into a global giant by signing superstar players, expanding commercial deals, and leveraging the club’s image worldwide. Similarly, Manchester City rose from mid-table English football to European dominance after acquisition by the Abu Dhabi United Group, showing how strategic wealth can completely rewrite a club’s history.
Rich individuals like Roman Abramovich (former owner of Chelsea) demonstrated how heavy investment could rapidly bring trophies and global recognition, while American billionaires owning clubs such as Manchester United focus more on commercial expansion, sponsorships, and global fan engagement.
However, the influence of rich people in football is not only positive—critics argue that extreme wealth creates imbalance, making it harder for smaller, community-based clubs to compete fairly.
Financial power can dominate transfer markets, inflate player wages, and shift football’s identity from a working-class sport to a luxury-driven industry. Despite this debate, one thing is clear: rich people have permanently reshaped football, turning it into a global business empire where money, fame, and the love of the game are tightly intertwined.
