Forests are not just collections of individual trees — they are interconnected biological communities. Through underground fungal systems called mycorrhizal networks, trees can transfer nutrients, water, and even chemical warning signals. This underground communication system is sometimes referred to as the “Wood Wide Web.” When one tree is attacked by insects, it can release chemical signals through the fungal network to warn nearby trees, allowing them to increase their defensive chemicals before the insects reach them. Even more surprisingly, older “mother trees” can recognize their own seedlings and send them extra nutrients to help them grow. This shows a form of cooperation and biological networking that challenges the idea that evolution is purely competitive. SOURCE
