Scientists believe that deep inside Neptune and Uranus, extreme pressure and temperature break apart methane molecules. The carbon atoms inside methane are compressed so intensely that they crystallize into diamonds. These diamonds don’t just form — they literally fall like rain toward the planets’ cores. Laboratory experiments on Earth have recreated similar conditions using powerful lasers. When plastic materials (which contain carbon and hydrogen) were compressed to mimic the internal conditions of these ice giants, tiny diamonds formed instantly. What makes this even more fascinating is that the diamonds might sink into a vast superheated ocean layer, possibly creating layers of diamond structures thousands of kilometers thick. This means that somewhere in our solar system, entire planetary layers could be made of solid diamond — something far beyond Earth’s geology. SOURCE
