In the 1980s and 1990s, the NFL tested helmet-mounted cameras to give fans a real “player’s-eye view” of American football. While the footage was exciting, the idea was mostly abandoned due to safety concerns, weight issues, and technology limits at the time. Decades later, this experiment inspired today’s body cams and SkyCam systems, making the NFL a pioneer in sports broadcast innovation. This makes American football one of the earliest sports to experiment with immersive, first-person viewing technology. SOURCE 1
