In 1983, Atari buried thousands of unsold video game cartridges in a landfill in New Mexico, including many copies of the famously unsuccessful E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial game. This dramatic event happened during the video game market crash of 1983, when the industry suffered severe losses due to oversaturation and poor quality control.
