Originally released in 2022, Sonic Frontiers is the most recent major 3D game to star Sonic the Hedgehog. In a change for the series, Sonic Frontiers introduced the open-zone concept, which gives players large open locations to explore as they reach more traditional Sonic levels. Sega refined the open-zone concept with Shadow Generations in 2024, and the company has suggested that future games will continue to expand on the idea. SOURCE
