Although its name suggests October, the festival actually begins in late September and runs until the first weekend of October. It originally started in 1810 to celebrate the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig (later King Ludwig I) and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. What began as a royal wedding celebration eventually turned into the world’s largest beer festival. Today, Oktoberfest attracts more than six million visitors from around the world. The festival features massive beer tents operated by Munich’s traditional breweries, where visitors enjoy specially brewed Oktoberfest beer served in one-liter mugs called Maß. Along with beer, the festival offers traditional Bavarian foods like pretzels, sausages, roast chicken, and pork knuckle. SOURCE
