In addition to the 24 official EU languages, there are more than 60 indigenous minority or regional languages, and finally, a large number of non-indigenous languages spoken by migrant communities. For the European population, in the pre-Brexit period, the most widely spoken mother tongue was German (16%), followed by Italian and English (13% each), then French (12%), and finally Spanish and Polish (8% each)[14].
