[Did you know that?] In southern Romania, particularly in Oltenia, desertification is progressing dangerously.

Romania is located in Eastern Europe, which gives it a continental climate that is more pronounced in certain regions, such as Wallachia (in the south of the country) and Moldova (in the east). In Transylvania (northwest) and Dobruja (southeast), the climate is more temperate. Transylvania is protected by the Carpathian Mountains, while Dobruja is strongly influenced by the Black Sea.

Rainfall is mainly in the summer (in the form of thunderstorms), but there is also heavy rainfall in the autumn. Deforestation and urban planning that is largely unconcerned with environmental considerations have accentuated the contrasts, both in temperature and rainfall, resulting in alternating heatwaves/frost and drought/floods. Temperatures are generally higher in the city: while in the "Wallachian plain" the average temperature in January is generally -8°C and the average temperature in July is 24°C, in Bucharest on the other hand, where for forty years massive concrete and glass constructions have proliferated to the detriment of residential areas and gardens, the averages are rather -2°C in winter, and 29°C in summer, with increasingly frequent peaks of 35°C, even 40°C.
