While Counter-Strike: Source kept the core bomb-defusal and hostage-rescue gameplay intact, it subtly changed weapon handling and movement mechanics. Recoil patterns felt different from CS 1.6, often considered heavier and less predictable, which sparked debate within the competitive community. Movement was slightly slower and more grounded, reducing the effectiveness of extreme bunny-hopping and air-strafing techniques. These changes made the game more accessible to new players but also caused division among veterans who preferred the faster, more precise mechanics of earlier versions. Despite this, CSS emphasized tactical teamwork, map control, and utility usage just as strongly as its predecessors.
