This allowed developers around the world to study, modify, and contribute to the operating system. OpenSolaris encouraged innovation and helped spread technologies like ZFS and DTrace beyond proprietary enterprise systems. Although the original OpenSolaris project was later discontinued after the acquisition of Sun by Oracle, it led to the creation of community-driven operating systems such as Illumos-based distributions. This open-source movement ensured that many Solaris technologies continue to evolve and influence modern systems today. SOURCE
